What is USB-C?

USB-C is a small, oval connector with 24 pins that fits either way up. It is a shape, not a speed: the same plug can carry anything from a phone's charge to 240 W, and data from 480 Mbps to 80 Gbps, depending on the cable and the devices at each end.

A connector, not a speed

USB-C is the shape of a plug and a port. Small, oval and the same on both sides, so it goes in either way up. Inside are 24 pins.

The USB Implementers Forum, the body behind USB, published the USB-C specification in August 2014. It has since become the one port on phones, tablets, laptops, headphones and chargers.

The shape is fixed. What runs through it is not. The same plug can carry a trickle of power or enough to run a laptop, data at phone-sync speed or fast enough for an external display. That depends on the cable and on the devices at each end.

What it looks like

A slim oval with rounded ends, about 8 by 2.5 mm. There is no top and no bottom.

Connector Shape Which way up
USB-C Slim oval Either
USB-A Flat rectangle, the classic USB plug One way
Micro-USB Small trapezoid One way
Lightning Flat blade, Apple only Either

Apple moved the iPhone from Lightning to USB-C with the iPhone 15, in 2023.

What travels through it

Three things: power, data and picture. Each follows its own standard, and the port only promises the shape.

Standard What it is for Top data speed
USB 2.0 Charging, syncing a phone, keyboards and mice 480 Mbps
USB 3.2 External drives, faster transfers Up to 20 Gbps
USB4 Docks, displays, fast storage. Runs only over USB-C. 40 Gbps, 80 Gbps in version 2
Thunderbolt 3, 4 and 5 Docks and displays on laptops that support it Set by the Thunderbolt version
DisplayPort Alt Mode A monitor straight from the port Picture, not files

Power: from a phone to a laptop

USB-C charging follows USB Power Delivery, often written USB PD. The charger and the device agree on how much power to send before any of it flows. The device asks. The charger offers what it can. A phone on a laptop charger takes what a phone needs, and no more.

The cable sets the ceiling:

  • Every USB-C cable carries at least 3 A, which is 60 W at 20 V.
  • A 5 A cable carries 100 W. It has a small chip, an e-marker, that tells the charger so.
  • Since USB PD 3.1 in 2021, the standard allows up to 240 W at 48 V, with a cable built for it.

So one charger can serve the whole desk. Cylindric UX1 has four USB-C ports and 165 W between them, up to 100 W from a single port. Enough for a laptop, a tablet and two phones at once.

Why USB-C cables are not all the same

Two cables can look identical and do different work. Two figures tell them apart: the watts a cable carries and the data speed it supports.

USB-C Cord A1 is a charging cable. It carries 100 W with USB Power Delivery and USB 2.0 data at 480 Mbps. That is enough to charge a laptop, and to sync a phone. It does not drive an external display. For a monitor or a fast drive, use a cable rated for USB 3.2, USB4 or Thunderbolt.

If a laptop charges slowly, look at the cable before the charger. A 60 W cable on a 100 W charger gives 60 W.

USB-C in the EU

USB-C is now the law for charging in the European Union. Directive (EU) 2022/2380 requires a USB-C charging port on new devices sold in the EU:

  • From 28 December 2024: phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and earbuds, handheld game consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice and portable navigation.
  • From 28 April 2026: laptops.

Devices that fast-charge must also use the same charging protocol, so a USB-C charger from one brand fast-charges a device from another. Shops that sell a device with a charger must offer it without one too.

Questions

What does USB-C stand for?

USB is Universal Serial Bus. The C names the connector type, after USB-A and USB-B.

Is USB-C the same as Thunderbolt?

No. Thunderbolt, from version 3 on, uses the USB-C connector. A Thunderbolt port accepts ordinary USB-C devices, but an ordinary USB-C port does not run Thunderbolt. A lightning-bolt symbol beside the port marks Thunderbolt.

Is USB-C faster than USB-A?

The connector has no speed of its own. The fastest standards, USB4 and Thunderbolt, run only over USB-C, so the quickest ports today are USB-C ports.

Can I charge my laptop over USB-C?

Yes, if the laptop charges over USB-C. Many do, and every new laptop sold in the EU from 28 April 2026 must. Use a charger and a cable that cover the laptop's wattage, which is printed on its original charger.

Can I use any USB-C charger for my phone?

Yes. With USB Power Delivery the phone asks for what it needs, so a larger charger is safe. A smaller one simply charges more slowly.

Are all USB-C cables the same?

No. The plug is the same; the watts and the data speed are not. Check both against what you want the cable to do.
